10 Step Program to Minimize Crash Risk


Overview

The increasing traffic congestion on our nation’s roadways wastes significant time and money, reduces productivity, and promotes risky driving behavior.


Employees may feel pressured to drive faster and for longer periods of time and to engage in potentially distracting in-vehicle activities to meet their job responsibilities.


Engaging in unsafe driving practices affects those who occasionally drive their personal vehicles for work purposes as well as those who spend their workday driving a company vehicle.


Have an adequate amount of sleep.
Avoid drinking any alcohol before driving. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and impairment.
Check medications if they cause drowsiness. Use public transportation if it does.
Avoid peak sleepiness periods as much as you can, such as midnight to 6 AM and late in the afternoon.

Experience
Only licensed and experienced drivers should drive the vehicle. Ideally, you must have a commercial driver's license.


Attention
Keep your focus, ensure that you're well-rested, avoid distractions like texting and eating. It is highly encouraged that drivers will only drive not more than eight hours per day.


Speed
Obey speed limits at all times. Pay attention to when you have to reduce your speed depending on road and weather conditions.


Seat Belts
Wear seat belts at all times. Regularly inspect and replace any missing, broken, or damaged belts and buckles.


Tire Pressure
Before each use, always inspect and check the tires' pressure. They must be properly inflated and the tread should not be worn down. Take note that tire pressures vary between the front and back tires.


Spares
Tires weaken with age even unused tires. Old tires are not recommended to be used even during emergencies because it might be dangerous. The Tire Identification Number (TIN) can help you identify the age of the tire, it is located at each tire's side wall.


Occupancy
Do not allow people to ride the vehicle beyond its seating capacity.


Cargo
Do not overload the vehicle nor place cargo on its roof.


Size
Vehicles that are substantially longer and wider than a car requires more space to maneuver, and further dependence on the use of side-view mirrors when changing lanes.

Proper maintenance and scheduled inspections are vital in preventing crashes and related losses.


Scheduled maintenance on servicing and checking of safety-related equipment must be done.


Consistent maintenance on a specified mileage interval must be done based on the manufacturer's recommendations.


Annual inspection on each vehicle should be done by a mechanic with documented results.

When inflating tires on split-rim wheels, use a tire-cage or other restraining device
Before welding, cutting, or heating is done on a wheel or wheel rim, remove the tires.
Take caution whenever you're draining and repairing fuel tanks, and from battery gases, it might cause an explosion. Never drain nor fill fuel tanks in a confined space or over a pit, and whenever the equipment is hot.
Charge the batteries in well-ventilated areas, make sure to avoid short-circuiting the batteries. Proper PPEs must be provided and used in handling battery acids.
