Health Risks with Display Screen Equipment (DSE)


Laptops, PC monitors, tablets, TV screens, smartphones and all other devices with screen displays are examples of DSEs.

Every day, Sally uses her computer and spends a significant part of her day using it to go through emails and finish her paperworks.


When she finally went for a check-up, her doctor said she suffers from asthenopia, also known as eye strain or ocular fatigue.


Staring at a screen for long periods is unhealthy for your eyes.
It can cause the following conditions:


As the number of workers using DSEs has increased, so are the health risks associated with their use, such as musculoskeletal disorders, stress and visual fatigue.


As a result, The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 was implemented  to protect DSE users from these risks.

Which risks are associated with overuse or improper use of DSE?


Poor posture is sometimes caused by the way we sit.
The first tip in improving your posture is by sitting properly.


Keep your back straight and your weight on the center.


Avoid putting too much pressure on the backs of your legs and knees from the seat's edge.


Move a little back into your chair to have good lumbar support.


For smaller users, consider using a footrest to reduce back strain.


Screen glare or bright reflections can put stress on your eyes especially when you use digital screens for long durations.


Which between the two is a better workplace setup?


It doesn't matter whether you are working from home or in the office.
Having a good posture and good work setup is vital in preventing musculoskeletal injuries caused by prolonged DSE use.

Today, we'll discuss some low cost controls you can use to optimize your workstation.


In the last lesson, we talked about good work posture and the basics of a comfortable DSE set-up.

In this lesson, you’ll learn about some useful hacks to break up long spells of DSE work.


Tip #1:
Create organised or scheduled rest breaks


Stretching #1
Hold your fingers with the other hand.
Bend your wrist down slowly and hold the position for 3 to 5 seconds.
Repeat 3 times.


Bend your wrist slowly up until you feel a stretch
And like before, hold and relax.


And then make a fist.
Make sure your thumb isn't tucked beneath your fingers.


Slide your fingertips up to your palm until they are at the base of your fingers.


...the duration and timing of changes in activity or breaks for DSE usage are not set in stone.
The arrangements will vary based on the circumstances.
For example, employers are not responsible for giving breaks to self-employed individuals.
