Emotional intelligence is also widely known as emotional quotient (EQ).
This refers to our capacity to manage our own emotions and work well with others.
Emotional intelligence is concerned with our capabilities to:
Discern, understand, and handle our own emotions,
Know how we influence the emotions of others with the ways we regulate our own emotions, and
Be aware of how we can manage ourselves emotionally with our relationships.
In summary:
Working on our self-awareness with our own emotions and the ways it impacts people is the key.

Don't you think that our bodies have a mind of their own?
We feel before we think.
Emotions are bodily sensations that can only be understood when put into words.


Stress impairs our capacity to think clearly.
In stressful situations, our brain operates differently: adrenaline runs high and you may have difficulty breathing or concentrating.


This is why high EQ is important.
Stress affects our cognitive abilities, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
Being adept at our EQ will help us handle these tough situations and be more successful in our personal and social lives.

Let's prepare.


Self Awareness has three components:
Your **attunement **to your emotions,
The **accuracy **of your attunement, and
Your self-confidence.


Emotional Awareness can be achieved through...
Sensing and acknowledge what you're feeling,
Gathering information-- what inside and outside factors may have caused this emotion?
Sitting with your emotions and trying to identify its purpose.


Afterwards, you may:
**Act **(if needed) based on what your intuition is telling you.
Maybe there's someone you need to resolve a conflict with, or maybe there's a personal need that you need to tend to for now.
*Mull over **the effect of your action and try to learn the lesson behind this interaction.


Evaluation
In our previous exercise, we tried to gauge your capacity for self-awareness.
Now, I want you to mull over the following questions on the next slide.


Checking-In
Are you aware of how you're feeling right now?
Can you put a name to it?
Do you know what may have caused this emotion?


Self-awareness can serve as our moral compass.
It becomes the foundation of our intuition and good decision-making.


Self-Management  has the following components:
Emotional self-control
Transparency
Adaptability
Achievement
Initiative
Optimism


Our emotions are our body's way of communicating to us.
By calling up positive emotions:
we can focus more at work,
be more involved with our colleagues, and
be enthusiastic about what we do.
This would lead to an alignment between our work and our passion.


Although stress impairs the way we think, stress may lead to what Goleman calls an Amygdala Hijack  -- an emotional reaction to stress that hijacks control of your brain and your responses.
When we become overwhelmed and frustrated with our own emotions-- we might even resort to harmful ways to cope with it.

Can you understand what it is trying to say?
How would you characterize these emotions?


Are they positive or negative?
If they are positive, how are they helping you personally and with your work?
If they are negative, how are you coping with these emotions?


Here are some exercises and tips in building up your self-regulation skills.
Create a physical and emotional space for solitude when you're overwhelmed with your emotions.
Do a self-awareness check.
Identify what triggered these emotions and try to reduce or avoid these triggers.
Look at your physical symptoms.
Have you eaten already?
Are you exhausted?
Is it time for a break?
What **stories **are you telling yourself?
Be mindful when you see yourself engaging in negative self-talk.
Re-orient your inner voice to practice positive self-talk.
Seek out positive emotions.
Try to see the good in your current circumstances.
List down three things that you are grateful for in your life.
Use your self-awareness as a compass when making decisions.
Be mindful of your tone, the way you talk, or the things you say to someone else.

This is the amalgamation of all three domains-- self awareness, self management, and social awareness.

This is where the importance of self-awareness enters the picture.

If your goal is to be a strong leader, you must make good use of these skills to help your team handle and surpass challenges.
These skills must be used to achieve the best possible outcome with compassionate leadership.
