Introduction to Exit Routes

Welcome!
Now that you're familiar with the key terms of OSHA's exit route standards, we'll teach you how to spot the signs of a safe exit route.


Lesson Objectives
In this lesson, you'll be able to:
Discuss OSHA's basic requirements for exit routes,
Point out what you should look out for in the specific aspects of an exit route, and
Help you gain mastery with evaluating exit routes through a series of simulations.

But stay alert!  There are still some things you must look out for to minimize your risk of danger.


**Check the fire door. **
The fire door is self-closing, so make sure that it is not held open.


Check the occupant load of the exit route.
A simple way to figure this out is to see if a number of people going down the exit route can smoothly descend the stairs without difficulty.


Check the outdoor  exit route.
Outdoor exit routes must have handrails to prevent any of you from falling. It must also be straight and stable to walk on.
Most importantly, it must not lead to a deadend!
