Effective workplace keeping can eliminate  any hazards and help get a job done safely and properly.


Poor practices can contribute to many accidents by hiding hazards that cause injuries.


If the sight of paper, debris, clutter and spills is accepted as normal, then other more serious health and safety hazards may be taken for granted.


Effective workplace keeping is an ongoing operation: it is not a hit-and-miss cleanup done occasionally.


What is good workplace keeping?


✔ The BasicsIt is not just cleanliness. It includes keeping work areas neat and orderly, maintaining halls, floors and workspaces uncluttered, and removing any waste materials (e.g., paper, cardboard) and other fire hazards from work areas.


✔ Safety RequirementsIt requires you to pay attention to important details such as the layout of the whole workplace, aisle marking, the adequacy of storage facilities, and maintenance.Good workplace keeping is also a basic part of accident and fire prevention.


✔ Safety “Culture”Poor “safety culture” can frequently contribute to accidents by hiding hazards that cause injuries.


Good  workplace keeping means more than just tidying up your workstation.


Spills should be cleaned up immediately.

How to execute an effective and safe lift

In this lesson, we will accomplish the following:
Learn the steps on how to lift safely.


A common workplace injury is to the back, caused by incorrect lifting or handling of heavy or large objects.
Often, the injury won’t be felt for some time and may be permanent.
Click 'Continue' to review each of the seven steps to safe lifting.


Approaching a Lift


Step 1 – Plan for the lift.
Consider the task duration, the layout of the work environment and experience of lift participants. Make sure your route is clear.


Step 2 – Get in position.
Stand close to the load with your feet apart creating a stable base for lifting.


Step 3 – Begin the lift.
Bend at the knees and keep your back straight.


Step 4 – Pick up the object.
Get a firm grip and move the object close to the body.


Step 5 - Lift.
Always lift smoothly (do not jerk). Where possible exert force in a forward or backward motion, as movements such as twisting, bending, and overreaching will increase the risk of injury.


Step 6 – Maneuver the object.
Always keep arms and load close to your body when turning.


Step 7 – Lower the object.
Use the leg muscles to lower the load. Keep your back as straight as possible.
