Stores with good lighting automatically draw peoples’ attention, making it one of the most important element to consider in visual merchandising.


To make good use of lighting, throw more light on fixtures and displays so customers will pay more attention to them.


Check the difference between the effect of daylight and artificial light too. Some wrinkles or dust in clothing might be more visible when you use artificial light at night.


Essential Elements of Visual Merchandising

Good lighting can make our store ambient and inviting, and it can be achieved through the combination of the following:


Ambient lighting
It is the most common type of lighting that illuminates the entire space of a store.


Accent lighting
This is the type of lighting that are used to focus on an object, particularly the ones on display. Examples of accent lighting are wall lights, recessed and track lights.


Task lighting
It is the kind of lighting that helps our brain become more alert and focused, like pendant lamps, under the cabinet and vanity lights. They are great when put in contrast with ambient lighting as they help create a nice ambience in stores.


Scrub the entire glass with a detergent solution.


Use a rag to wipe a narrow strip at the top, bottom and sides.


Clean the rest with a squeegee. To make sure you don’t leave any water marks behind, start at the top of the window and go all the way across to the other side.


If you look at the lower end of the squeegee, you’ll see that it is where most of the water drips off.


When turning your squeegee to wipe the next part,  don't position the “wetter end” for more than 90 degrees so it doesn’t leave behind some water marks.


Do the same to the other side until you reach the very bottom of the glass.


Wipe the rest off with a microfibre cloth for a smooth finish.
